What Is The Effect Of Video Games On Children?

The history of video games is not as simple and as straightforward as most of the other games

. Ralph Baer was a TV engineer, who worked at a TV company named Loral. In the year 1951, his Chief Engineer, Sam Lackoff, asked him to build the best television set in the world. Ralph wanted to build something more than a TV; he wanted to introduce the concept of playing games on it. Though the basic idea came into being, it could not be implemented, because Ralphs boss discarded it.

The first commercially viable video game was Computer Space in 1971, which laid the foundation for a new entertainment industry in the late 1970s within the United States, Japan, and Europe. Video games can be described as a game in which there is an interaction with a user interface. This interaction leads to the generation of a visual feedback on a video device.

Video games are a unique form of entertainment, because they encourage players to become a part of the game's script.

Today's sophisticated video games require players to pay constant attention to the game, unlike passively watching a movie. The most widely used "positive" impact video games are said to have on children is that they may improve a player's manual dexterity and computer literacy. The ability to learn teamwork, increased visual acuity, improved visual cognition, reduced reaction times and increased speed of activities and better visual and spatial memory are some of the positive impact that video games have.

However, numerous studies show that video games, especially ones with violent content, make teens more aggressive. Part of the increase in the aggressive behavior found in children has been linked to the amount of time children are allowed to play video games. In one study it was found that a majority of teens admitted that their parents do not impose a time limit on the number of hours they are allowed to play video games. The study also showed that most parents were unaware of the content or the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rating of the video games their children play.

In that regard, parents can help the children to use video games as a useful device that can enhance their creativity. Age is an important criterion while choosing and playing video games. As parents, we should allow children to play only age appropriate games. Children below age 3 should not be allowed to play video games, as they are not appropriate for these children. There are some pre-school games for children of the age of about 3 year. Parents need to observe their children from time to time for any negative effect of these video games on them and likewise keep an eye on the type of video games their children play.
