What Is The Future For Medical Transcription?

Many people wonder if medical transcription has a future in it as a career

. Is it worth paying for all that training, or are electronic medical records and voice recognition software doing away with the need for medical transcriptionists.

The short answer is that it's not exactly doing away with medical transcriptionists. New technology is, however, changing how the job will look in the future. If you want to be a medical transcriptionist, you'll want to be prepared.

Many people believe that the next step is for transcriptionists to take on more of an editing role. Software does not have the comprehension that a human does, and even the best voice recognition software makes mistakes.

That said, the job outlook for medical transcriptionists according to the U.S. Department of Labor is still good, with good job growth. The need is not going to go away anytime soon.

There is training available for those who want to be prepared to take on the medical transcription editor role. Make sure that you get your training through a good school, and expect that you'll have to go through the regular training for a medical transcriptionist anyhow. Editors will need to know how it's all done, after all.

The simple truth of the matter is that people have been talking about voice recognition destroying the industry for at least a decade. It still hasn't happened, although there are more and more doctors using that technology. There are still a good number who find it simpler to pay a human to do the work than to take the time to train the software to do the reports for them.

Then again, for standard transcription work, you can put voice recognition software to work for you. Dragon Naturally Speaking is a popular program that has a lot of good features. There's even a medical version that's rather more pricey than the usual, but is prepared to deal with transcribing medical reports.

The main thing you need to do is pay attention to the industry if this is where you want to work. Be ready for the changes, and get whatever training you can to keep up. Even if you exclude the changes in the job itself, there's a lot of information any good transcriptionist should keep up with in order to keep his or her skills up to date.

If this is the career you want, if you want to do this work at home, don't let fear of where the industry is going scare you off. Get the training that will prepare you for that future instead.
