What Is Tooth Erosion?

Tooth erosion is a common dental condition which can be very painful if left untreated

. Palatine dentists see a number of cases of tooth erosion in both children and adults. Essentially, this condition is what happens when the outer layer of the tooth, the enamel, begins to erode. This exposes the dentin underneath which is quite sensitive, and can begin to hurt when it is robbed of the protection offered by the enamel.

Tooth erosion is caused primarily by the foods and drinks that we consume. When these things are too high in acid content, the acid begins to erode the enamel which guards the outsides of our teeth. This is why children often suffer from this condition. The drinks which children love, like soda, and those which we often perceive as healthy for them, like juice, are both very high in acid content and can greatly increase the probability of tooth erosion becoming an issue.

There are many other foods and drinks which can help contribute to tooth erosion. Acidic food such as citrus fruits can lead to the condition. Coffee and tea, and certain alcoholic beverages can play a contributing role in adults.

There are also internal bodily causes of tooth erosion. This is what happens when for one reason or another there is an excess of stomach acid present in the oral cavity. This can happen when a person suffers from conditions like bulimia or acid reflux which push stomach acid into the mouth.

When acid erosion is becoming a problem from a dental point of view, the first thing the dentist will typically recommend is altering the behavior, or treating the condition which is causing the erosion in the first place. By altering the behavior which is causing the erosion, the teeth have a chance to heal and further damage will be prevented. In rare cases a more severe treatment such as the application of veneers to the teeth might be recommended.

Tooth erosion is fairly easy to spot. There are two primary signs which may indicate that the condition is starting to appear. The first sign is yellow teeth. Dentin is yellow. As the enamel begins to fade the yellow underneath will start to become visible. Yellow teeth do not automatically indicate tooth erosion though, as there are other conditions which this can signify. If the corners of teeth start to appear to be clear, it is also an indication that the teeth are starting to erode.
