What Is Translation And Why Should It Be Done By A Professional Native Translator

The objective of translation is to pass on the understanding of a text to people

in their own language and re-create the same impact as the original text. It intends to reproduce the content of the original text for a native audience. This, in turn, implies that the person responsible for the translation should be able to understand and replicate the nuances of the original text to its target audience.

The debate whether translation should be done by professional native translators assumes an even more critical significance in the face of a flatter world where people from different cross sections of society are coming together to participate in socio-cultural and economic growth. Machine translations, which are in vogue these days, suffer from the inadequacy of being able to understand and appreciate the puns, style effects and cultural vagaries of the source text. The result is often a bland meaningless content which lacks the fervor of the original text and sometimes so much so, that even the basic meaning ends up being mis-communicated.

Also, chances are that if the translator is not a native speaker of the language in which the text is being translated, then he will not be able to see the shortcomings of the final text which, nevertheless, the audience would end up noticing, thereby creating a negative impression about the final translated text and the credibility of the content that it intends to communicate.

This, however, does not disqualify people from other cultures to be qualified translators in a language which is not their native language. In such cases though, this needs to be compensated with a high level of training and familiarization with not only the native language but also the native culture.
