What Is Woodchip Wallpaper Made Of And How Do You Fit It ?
Woodchip wallpaper is made up of 2 layers of paper and has a wood fibre in between
. There are a number of grade thickness of woodchip and the thickest grade will cover the roughest of surfaces. The thickness of the wallpaper is distinguished by the size and shape of the wood fibres.
Ingrain paper had been invented by Hugo Erfurt in 1864 who was a German pharmacist. It was used first of all as a decoration for shop windows and then from about 1920 it was used as a wallpaper.
Woodchip is a very versatile wallpaper and can be used in almost all applications. It is very good for covering rough and uneven surfaces or if the surface is loose and breaking away. The wallpaper can be hung vertically or horizontally but there are a number of things to consider before starting to hang the wallpaper.
HANGING WOODCHIP WALLPAPER
To hang wallpaper you will need: Paste brushes and sponge. Paste table, bucket, stepladders to size, knife, tape measure, plumb line, large scissors, paste.
Make sure the room is clear of all obstacles and cover all remaining furniture and exposed carpet and flooring.
After removing the existing wallpaper, sand all the walls with a heavy grade sandpaper. Fill all cracks and holes. When the filler is dry, re-sand all surfaces and brush the surfaces with a brush. It is best the coat the walls with a thinned down paste solution.
Measure the height of your wall and allow a couple of inches at the top and bottom to allow for any height variation from one side of the room and the other. Cut enough lengths of wallpaper to cover the width of your room and lay aside.
Using a plumb line measure the distance from edge of the wall the width of the wallpaper and mark the line with a pencil. It is not necessary to be too accurate as there is no pattern match but it helps to keep measurements for any trimming to be done at the other end of the wall.
Paste the wallpaper strip thoroughly, fold and allow to soak in for 5 minutes. Start from the top of the wall allowing for approx 2 overlap. Allow to drop, peeling back the wallpaper carefully as it falls. Smooth out the paper with a brush or sponge, making sure all air and excess paste is removed. Trim the top and bottom with a pair of scissors and smooth back down. When hanging the next strip be sure to butt the two edges. The advantage of woodchip wallpaper is that you can easily add extra paste to re-stick or too add additional paste after the paper has dried.
