What Kind Of Liposuction Techniques Are Available?

There are a variety of liposuction techniques which are used widely in the field of plastic surgery today

. Some techniques are more popular or more effective than others. Different techniques may be used on different areas of the body as well. Among the techniques discussed in this article are the Tumescent, Super Wet, Power Assisted, and Laser Assisted Lypolysis techniques.

The tumescent method makes it possible to do the entire procedure under local anesthesia. The definition of the word "tumescent" is "swollen or hard." When lidocaine and epinephrine are injected into the subcutaneous fat, or the fat located just underneath the skin, it makes the area swollen and hard. A large amount of lidocaine and epinephrine (which is a capillary constrictor) are used in this procedure, but it has proven to be very safe. The epinephrine or vasoconstrictor allows the use of large amounts of lidocaine (local anesthesia) to be used safely. It also prevents a large amount of blood loss. The tumescent technique is often less painful than liposuction performed under general anesthesia, and is associated with the use of microcannulas. Microcannulas are cannulas with a small diameter, and they make the results of the procedure smoother, and often more satisfactory. The use of larger cannulas has the tendency to produce skin irregularities and scarring.

While the dry technique and the wet technique are no longer considered safe methods of removing fat, the super wet technique is still used. In this process a certain amount of dilute local anesthesia is injected into the subcutaneous fat. The amount used in the super wet technique is less than half of what is used in the tumescent method. However, the patient is also under general anesthesia. There is also significantly more blood lost in the super wet technique as compared to the tumescent technique.

There have been a number of devices created in order to assist in the liposuction procedure. Some of these devices are called Power Assisted Liposuction devices or (PALs). These devices are powered by compressed air or electric motors. They produce a quick in-and-out movement of the attached cannula. Some devices also have a spinning movement that can be produced. These devices are supposed to assist the surgeon in the actual process of removing the subcutaneous fat. While there has been some positive feedback concerning PALs, it is not a proven fact that they make the process any easier or more satisfactory in the results.

Laser Assisted Lypolysis is a minimally invasive method of removing fat. This technique also uses microcannulas. Tumescent fluid is used, and so general anesthesia is not needed. A microcannula is inserted into a small incision and laser energy is used to produce heat in the subcutaneous fat. The heat actually melts the fat and coagulates tissue, creating a tighter slimmer effect in the areas worked on. One of the advantages to this procedure is that it can be done at the physician's office and has a very short recovery time.

Most of these techniques, but particularly those involving the tumescent method, can be easily accessed nationwide, from New York to California. Liposuction has become a much safer process as we have made technological advances. Dangerous methods like the dry technique and the wet technique no longer need to be used. There are safer and more satisfactory techniques now available to us.
