What Makes A Good Nurse Great

Nursing is an incredibly demanding field. It requires you to give so much of yourself that it can often be difficult to keep yourself physically and emotionally healthy. There are many amazing nurses out there, but the majority of them have a few very important traits in common. Here are a couple things that make good nurses, great.

1. Emotionally Stable.

If you are an emotional basket case, how can you expect anyone to trust you and let you help them? Nurses have to be emotionally strong, leave their issues at the door and deal with the problems at hand. Having a fight with your boyfriend or child should not affect the treatment you give Mr. Anderson. Part of being emotionally mature is the ability to focus on the task at hand and compartmentalize your feelings.

2. Adaptability.

A nurses day is never the same, and you have to be able and willing to adapt to almost any circumstances. When all the rooms are filled and you have to treat a patient in the hallway, you should be able to take it in stride and be taking their vitals within minutes. And remember that anyone under stress, as most are in and around the healthcare industry, can be incredibly unpredictable. Flexibility is key for dealing with continually changing issues.

3. Excellent Communication Skills.

Nursing is not a career for the shy or faint of heart. You need to be able to effectively communicate with doctors, other nurses, patients, families and visitors, and other staff every single day. Above and beyond getting your message understood, you need to be able to do it with dignity and tact, often in environments that are lacking these traits. Some people are born with this skill, others learn it, but the bottom line is, nurses need it.

4. Empathy.

There is not a good nurse out there that doesnt feel at least a smidgen of their patients pain. When your profession is to constantly be in contact with people who are frightened and in pain, you have to be able to understand how these people are feeling and react appropriately. For example, scoffing at someone who is afraid of a mundane surgery would not the action of a great nurse.

5. Physically Capable.

You dont need to able to run a marathon, though that might help. Nurses stay on their feet for 12 hours at a time or more, and they need to be mentally dialed in for that entire time. You need to be in good enough shape to not have to think about the fact that you havent had a break in 9 hours and that your feet are killing you. If you have the physical endurance covered, you are able to focus on the more important things, like your patients.

These are just an important few of the myriad of traits that make up a great nurse. This list could go on for pages and pages about the detail oriented, selfless, compassionate, knowledgeable nurses out there that are amazing beyond words. But the most relevant trait is what you believe to be the most important. What is something that makes a good nurse great?
