Home burglaries and home invasions are becoming so commonplace anymore that people don't think twice about them. When you see one on television it is becomes so mundane that your reaction could very well be ho hum-not another one. The fact of the matter is they are becoming almost epidemic.

One out of every six homes in this country this year will be the victim of a home burglary. Part of the reason of course is that homeowners make it so darn easy. 60 percent of all home burglaries happen through unsecured doors and windows. Police officials tell us that 90 percent of all home burglaries can be prevented.

There was a story the other day about a woman who lived in an apartment complex where dogs were allowed. It was the middle of the night and she was sound asleep but was awaken by her dog barking ferociously at someone knocking on her door. Now if someone was knocking at my door at two o'clock in the morning I certainly wouldn't let them in. And she didn't.

She went to her peephole and sure enough it was some drunken teenagers. The moral of that story is that the barking dog woke her up and got her full attention.

A police officer with the local Colorado Springs Police Department was asked what the most effective way to prevent a home burglary or home invasion was. His answer-get a dog with a good bark.

The truth of the matter is a barking dog is one of the most effective deterrents against home burglary and home invasion. The bad guys don't want to mess with a dog-that may be the most sensible thing they've done. But not everyone wants a dog. Now you can get barking dog sounds without the dog.
