What Makes the Perfect Porch?
The perfect porch to one person can mean something completely different to another person. Whether it be color, furniture, seasonal decor, or a thematic scheme, your needs can change as often as a gentle afternoon wind.
This is true even for Paula Wallace, a porch aficionado and President of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). "My porches evolve, transform, and transfigure all the time! The two porches at our home in the Savannah historic district are a perfect example. They are both in the book [Perfect Porches]. My husband and I are both designers, so we are revising the porch on a weekly, and sometimes daily, basis."
Just as you would decorate any other room in your home, a porch is no different. For example, would you paint your living room a color such as stark white? Probably not. Thus, your porch is no different. You would pick a color that is conducive to the mood and atmosphere you want to create.
If you plan to spend a lot of time on your porch - and that can depend on whether it is fully enclosed and open to the outside world, you also select porch furniture based upon both comfort and climate. Choose from wood finishes and top-quality fabrics if the elements are friendly. On the other hand, go to the opposite extreme and use heavy-duty fabrics, vinyl, or teak designed to work with the elements for extended enjoyment and longevity.
What about privacy? Some people just love to have their home wide open: no curtains (or only those that are decorative), no blinds, just beautiful window. Then there are others who prefer a cozier, even safe, setting. A porch becomes perfect for you when it fits your needs. If you want to watch the world go by, then forego the blinds or coverings. Yet if that perfect porch is one for which you want an intimate feel, select some coverings or barriers that really make it as if it were an indoor space.
For Paula Wallace, who is also the author of Perfect Porches: Designing Welcoming Spaces for Outdoor Living, the perfect porch was a fantasy that she shared with her sister. "On rainy days, my sister Pam and I would turn tables upside down and build our own cozy rooms. We were Laura and Mary Ingalls, out on the prairie. That is what our porch was: a portal, into the world, into stories, into the imagination. And of course, it was about family."
The great thing about a porch is that the ideas are limited only by your own preferences. Look around your neighborhood, or drive through a neighborhood with front, outdoor spaces and see what kind of mood or owner reflection they convey. More than likely, you will see something - maybe a piece of artwork, a seasonal display, or a specific material - that appeals to you. Change it up as need be and then get started on creating the perfect porch that really becomes your own little piece of heaven.
