What Message your Clothes are Sending
You've heard the term "dress for success"; and you've likely found yourself judging
another person based on their appearance at least once in your life. We are all guilty of this type of judgment; it's just human nature to look at another and develop an image of the type of person they are.
The fact that we live in a much more casual society today makes it more difficult to determine the best fashion for the classroom. Further, when you work with kids all day every day, you can find it easy to begin taking your fashion cues from them. This, quite frankly, is the first and worst mistake of teacher fashion. When you walk into the classroom, you are sending messages both verbal and non-verbal. You are letting your students, your peers; your superiors know how you feel about your job. The statement you make with your clothing is a strong one.
So what can you do to make sure you are sending the right message with the clothing that you wear? How can you maintain comfort throughout the day and also display your personal style without going over the top? Being a teacher doesn't mean you can't be fashionable. In fact, most students will remember a teacher who dressed a particular way. You want to be remembered as the teacher that had style! You don't want kids leaving the classroom whispering "Is he/she really wearing that?"
Here is one very easy way to dress up your outfit without looking like you're dressed for a night out with friends. Jewelry is special to most people. Well chosen pieces can dress up any outfit and make you feel good about yourself. Most teachers have many things to carry: keys, ID badges, etc. This is where beaded lanyards come in handy. More than the plain lanyard that you were given at your last conference, beaded lanyards maintain your professional appearance and make you feel good too. Many teachers are wearing beaded lanyards already that show off their personal style while making a fashion statement. When you pair fashion and function, you win.
Being a teacher, you don't have to show up every day in a suit. You don't have to wear heels if you spend time out with smaller children. However, you can find a balance between that which is comfortable but too casual (such as shorts and sneakers) and that which is too stiff and confining. There are so many options for teacher fashion that can include well-fitting jeans and separates such as sweaters and skirts or pants.
When you give yourself a little lift in the clothing department, you will also find that you feel differently about yourself. Clothes do not make the person, but the person can use the clothes to make some dynamic statements. It's your classroom. Stand up there in front of your students and make them take notice. Be bold, be fun, be comfortable, but be professional. A teacher has a huge impact on the lives on their students, and dressing the part does indeed play a large part in the interactions that occur both inside and outside the classroom.
