What Modeling Agencies Do
Reputable modeling agencies do a lot for a model
, whether just starting out or long established and popular with clients. They act as the models agent or business manager and want the best jobs possible for them, because their reputations as an agent and agency are affected by the models work as well as their commissions, or cut of the action. If clients like the model, repeat business is likely, and both the model and the agency are happy.
There are some so-called modeling agencies that do NOT do a lot for a model, and are just out for a quick buck and are unscrupulous and downright dishonest. Inexperienced models should remember: never pay a joining fee to an agency; to ignore pressures of time limits on signing; to not believe that to be represented by an agency you have to sign an exclusive contract or use their photographers only for a portfolio. These are all ways that disreputable agencies try to get money. Just as dubious is the practice of charging for so-called modeling schools where a candidate is taught to walk, pose and present herself. Good skills to have as such, they are not sufficient for succeeding in the business.
If a model gets an invite to join an agency, they should check out the company on the internet, look for references, and past or current experiences with models they represent. A good agency will want to see the model in person and will not just accept photographs; a good agency will have an office, a staff, and business stationary and detailed contracts. It is quite common, however, that a model can tell a good
model agency only after the jobs or placements they managed to secure.
A good model agency pays for the first tests and polaroids of the model, which is an initial investment and expresses the belief of the agency in the model. It also happens that a model just starting out in the business has to pay their own way for test photographs, polaroids and composite cards. They may or may not spend a lot of money on a portfolio of photographs, but it is nice to know that a top modeling agency does not require a portfolio; they will acquire the photographs as they obtain work for modeling or arrange test shoots with their own photographers. They have your best interests at heart, because if you make money, so do they.
