When beginning a new job it is very important you realize what you should not be wearing. The image you portray will say an awful lot about you to those around you. If you're overall appearance is sloppy and unkempt your employer will assume you're a lazy and unprofessional worker. It is important that you are dressing to give the best impression you can. These tips will help you to dress for success and avoid this unhappy situation.

Start by observing your coworkers and office environment if you want to know what not to wear to work. You will want to take note of the atmosphere and whether it is business or business casual. Take note of what clients or customers are wearing when they stop in at the office, are they typically wearing formal business suits? Can you see most of your colleagues in sports jackets or sweaters? Are clear stockings favored, or are there an abundance of different colored tights? What kind of footwear is worn, smart shoes, high-heels or ballet pumps? Are people in colorful clothing or are they dressed in controlled colors, such as navy, black or grey?

You need to take all of this into consideration if you want to know what not to wear to work. In general, for any business environment, you will want to avoid jeans, showing too much skin, shorts, flip-flops, graphic t-shirts, sneakers, unnatural hair colors, facial piercings, visible tattoos and very busy patterns. It's not that jewelry is a bad thing, but you don't want them to distract from a generally professional air. Keep away form clothing and jewelry which can be offensive, or has been inspired by cartoons. Nails and hair should be well taken care of, you should appear clean and tidy. Your hair should be kept smart and low maintenance, nothing outlandish.

Also, keep your nails to a reasonable length and choose neutral or dark tones for nail polish. Brightly colored nail polish is never a good idea for work. Wear the correct size clothing. Your underwear shouldn't ever be visible under your clothing, either. The workplace is not an appropriate environment to wear slippers, sweatpants, or pajamas. You want people to notice your skills and work product, you do not want your clothes to be the only thing that people remember about you.
