What Robbers Look For When Breaking Into Your Home

Protecting your home security is probably one of your biggest concerns

. If it is not, it should be nothing is more devastating than having your personal space violated. Beyond whatever financial setbacks you experience due to a robbery or break-in, you must contend with the personal loss of a sense of safety and security in your own house, which is something that is extremely hard to get back. Add to that the legitimate threat you might experience from a violent intruder, and this sounds like a situation you would just prefer to avoid all together!

So how do you protect your home security so that you are never the victim of an attack or crime? Well, unfortunately you can never completely eliminate the risk. But there are a lot of effective precautions you can take. Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind when protecting your home security is to develop the mind of criminal. Once you do this, you will be able to imagine exactly what they are looking for when targeting a house. Here are some common weaknesses that criminals target when scanning through your neighborhood:

1. They look to see whether or not the house advertizes a home security system.

Criminals may not be the brightest bunch overall, but many of them are at least smart enough not to completely self-sabotage. They know that if they see a sticker in a front window or a flag on the lawn boasting the name of a home alarm company that this house is protected. They realize that if they do decide to break in, that the cops will immediately be alerted to the presence of intruders and they will be on the property in minutes. The potential criminals also realize that whoever is sleeping inside the house will also be instantly made aware of their presence, and thus better prepared to defend themselves and their homes. All in all, breaking into a house that will create this number of obstacles just does not seem worth it they will likely not get away with much more than a nice pair of shoes at the backdoor, it is very likely that they will end up spending the night and possibly the next couple of months or years in jail. So what do you learn from this? Get a home alarm, make sure to turn it on, and advertize its presence within your home.

2. They look for cracked windows.

Many people, especially those who live in suburbs or other relatively safe neighborhoods neglect the very real dangers of this modern world. Leaving a window slightly open is almost like an open invitation to a robber to jimmy it. Shut the windows when you leave the house and at night. If it is summer, get a fan!

3. They look for newspapers/mail piling up on the front stoop.

Criminals obviously prefer to strike when no one is home. The home of a family that is on vacation is thus the perfect target. Do not make it obvious that you are out of town get your mail held at the post office, and have your neighbors pick up your newspapers.
