What Symptoms Indicate You Need A Hearing Test?

Getting a hearing test may not be something you want to do

. Sometimes, you may not even think you need this type of screening or evaluation. It is common for people who have even significant loss to feel this way because they may not even notice it. Before you avoid this type of testing, schedule one with your audiologist. This is especially important if your family doctor has already told you that you need this type of further screening to find out if you have loss, how bad it is and what can be done about it.

What Your Family Doctor Noticed

If you were in to see your family doctor and he or she performed even a basic type of screening on you, it is likely the doctor saw some concerns if he or she recommended a further evaluation. This may be based on what types of sounds you cannot hear. In some cases, your doctor may notice that you are not understanding specific words due to a loss of the ability to hear those sounds. In other cases, the problems may be related to the failed screening provided to you. Depending on the volume of sound you can hear, the doctor may believe you need further evaluation.

What You May Notice

In some situations, you can notice the differences and changes in your own ability to hear things around you. For example, you may notice that the volume on the television or the radio needs to be louder than it used to need to be. Perhaps you are struggling to hear your loved ones speak to you over the phone. You may even ask them to repeat themselves numerous times throughout the day. If you are experiencing these types of symptoms, it is important to schedule a type of hearing test that can give you more information and direction about the potential problem.

Who to See

In either of these situations, it is a good idea to see a specialist. The audiologist will be able to provide specific information and guidance to you after you have a more thorough evaluation completed. This information may include things like the types of sounds you can hear, the volumes that are uncomfortable to you and the ranges of sound levels you feel are comfortable to you. With this information, the audiologist can better make recommendations for you such as the use of a device.

There are many situations in which having a hearing test like this is a good idea. You may not realize just how much exposure to sound you've had or just how deep of a concern you are experiencing. Yet, there is help and the first step is getting this testing.
