What Their Facebook Tells You About Your Relationship

The Facebook status has become the new equivalent of "having the talk"

. The modern day version of wearing his letterman sweater, or his class ring around your neck. The social networking site allows people to talk about just about every aspect of their lives, and their relationships are no different. Facebook allows one to categorize their relationship by Single, In a relationship, Engaged, Married, It's complicated, In an open relationship, or Widowed. So what does the status tell you about your relationship? Even more, what one shares on these sites may be an indicator of where your relationship is heading.

If you think you are in an exclusive relationship and the others status shows "Single" or "It's complicated", does that mean they are still out on the prowl? Maybe, but maybe not. Some people are private folks and they don't feel the need to share every aspect of their relationship with the world. I respect that, and I certainly don't do it myself. Facebook however, is a social networking site! It is where people share things they do, places they go, people they hang with, ideas etc... I would say to look at how open the person is with other things they post. I often don't mention names or pics on my own Facebook in order to protect the other persons privacy, not mine. If the person you are with is private about everything on FB, then that may be true for them and your relationship. I wouldn't be too alarmed if they are in no hurry to change their status, or post the details about where you two went last night. Do you really want their 432 friends to read that anyway?

On the other hand, if the person your seeing posts pics of their Tahoe weekend- that you were on with them, yet you are in none of the pics- that would be a red flag to me. Kind of like taking off your wedding ring before you go out. If they post every hour about their current location, where they ate pizza for lunch, and how long they stayed at the gym, but don't write "Becky and I are going to the movies", it would bother me.

If the latter is true and they seem to be talking about everything they are doing, and posting pics of a lot of friends and gatherings up to the point where you are not involved, I would say they are probably keeping their options open and I wouldn't start calling them your significant other just yet. As usual, this is just one Diva's opinion.

Perhaps in the future, couples will have "Relationship Status Change" celebrations when they make it offical. There could be lots of pomp and circumstance about the event and they could log on together and each declare "In a relationship"! Of course that idea could be just me looking for an excuse for a party.
