The Bouncy castle originated in Louisiana, USA when John Scurlock was experimenting with inflatable covers for tennis courts. The first bouncy castle company was created in New Orleans and they began renting castles out in 1968. Back then they were marketed to children for parties and school events and initially they were very successful. During this time the bouncy castles did not have any walls which presented an obvious safety risk. John Scurlocks son was the first person to create and indoor play centre made completely of inflatables but after the value of the property increased they had to cease operations. Currently in the UK a bouncy castle has to have at least 3 enclosed walls with one open wall allowing for entrance and exit.

With the development of bouncy castles people have brought their ideas to life creating different shapes with different themes. Inflatable assault courses are becoming more regular and they often get used at events. Children can race along and they are safe. Other objects have been developed from the bouncy castles like and inflatable gladiator ring where two opponents hit each other with cushioned sticks until one falls onto the floor.

Another popular development is that of the bungee cord incorporation. These work by having bungee cord attached to the back of the inflatable and then opponents see how far they can run along the length of the inflatable and then they place an object as far along as possible on a Velcro strip.

Although there is no official world record for the biggest bouncy castle in the world there are many huge ones around. One of the worlds biggest bouncy castles did feature in a 2011 Barclays TV advert. There is a world record regarding how long a group have constantly bounced on a bouncy castle.

A group of 7 bounced on a bouncy castle for a total of 27 hours which beat the previous record of 24 hours. In the Edinburgh Fringe Festival a Shakespeare group has begun showing some of Shakespeares tragedies on a bouncy castle with the aim of getting children interested and this group did go on to audition for Britains Got Talent. Another strange use for these inflatables is a new upcoming TV show called Rollerwars which plans to use a 200ft inflatable within the show.

Bouncy castles can be a very good source of fitness as the effort required to constantly bounce. Children will enjoy playing on them as well which means it will get them out of the house whilst they stay fit and have fun. Recently smaller castles have been available from retailers that allow for regular use in the garden. Normal bouncy castles are made from extremely tough vinyl or PVC. But the ones available from retailers are made from less tough materials which means they do not last as long and do not bounce as much.

The decoration of these castles can vary a lot. The castles tend to take on a certain theme which can suit different children at different ages. Common themes tend to take on those of cartoon characters and they are often painted with a long lasting vinyl paint. They are not very hard to clean either as generally all you need is kitchen detergent and something to scrub with.

Bouncy castles can be hired out for low prices or if you have a lot of money you can have specifically designed to meet your own needs and this is what many Bouncy castle companies do as they bring their own ideas to life. The hiring business is one that is very popular during the summer months with business being slow during the winter.
