What To Do If Your Ride Is Drunk
You have just had the time of your life with a few friends
, and it is almost time to head home or wherever you are spending the night. However, you notice that the driver's actions indicate that they have been drinking. What do you do? Keep reading for some helpful information.
The first thing to note is that unless you are a doctor or keep a breathalyzer machine in your pocket, it may be impossible to know for sure whether someone is impaired by their drinking. This is why it is so important not to allow someone who has been drinking to drive, even if they are acting okay. Take a cab or the keys to protect yourself and everyone else in the car and/or on the road.
It may make you feel less cool to be the designated driver, but, when everyone is drinking, someone has to either be the designated driver or be the designated cab-caller. Always know beforehand who this person is supposed to be, and, if you see them drinking, be willing to find a different way home. Do not ride with someone that has been drinking, stand up for your own safety.
Knowing who has had what to drink is nearly impossible, especially in a busy club or at a rowdy party. When you are concerned that the designated driver has been drinking, be the responsible one and stay sober. If you have already been drinking, consider sleeping over or calling a cab. Always be aware and in control of your situation and safety.
This is not to say that you should always have to be the sober member of the party. Rotate with a few other people, take turns as the designated driver. If this isn't an option, one of you should have the phone number of someone willing to pick you up and take you where you need to go. This can mean a cab company, a friend, family member, roommate, or even someone from work.
Finally, don't be afraid to stand up for yourself. There may be some peer pressure to "get over it" or "don't worry about it" when people are drinking, and some will refuse to hand over the car keys or get another ride. You may be forced to be the odd person out, catching a ride alone. If this is the case, it may be time to find someone else to party with. Your safety should to be your priority, as well as the safety of other passengers and motorists.
