What To Do In Case Of Drowning

Drowning is more common than you think and many of its victims are kids

. Death from drowning is caused by suffocation when liquid enters the lungs. This prevents the lungs from bringing oxygen to the rest of the body leading to cerebral hypoxia and myocardial infarction.

Drowning has remained the leading cause of fatalities among children aged 12 years old and younger in many areas of the world. For example, in the United States alone, it is the second leading cause of death for children of this age (second only behind road accidents.) These incidents do not just occur in pools, lakes and other bodies of water. In fact, kids can be killed in smaller bodies of water, including bath tubs and wading pools.

The drowning rates around the world differ based on climate, national swimming culture and access to water. In the United Kingdom, approximately 450 drownings occur each year or 1 per 150,000 people. In comparison, the United States sees 6,500 every year or 1 in 50,000 of the population. The victims are typically young to adolescent males.

How do you save a child who falls into a pool? After pulling him out of the water, encourage him to cough. This is a safety mechanism that helps breathing. Wrap the kid in a warm towel and keep him close in case of shock and fear. Try to remain calm and avoid exaggerated negative reactions so you wont increase the child's fear of swimming and the water. If the child is unconscious and has no heartbeat, call 911 and apply CPR immediately.

If the child appears to be fine, continue to observe them for the next several days for signs of secondary drowning. This occurs up to 72 hours after initial water exposure. Symptoms can include coughing, voice changes and difficulty breathing. Other signs include extreme fatigue, sudden illness or mood changes. If you think your child has inhaled a great amount of water, listen to their breathing. Check for wheezing or gurgled sounds that might indicate water within the lungs.
