What To Do When Pond Ph Level Swings?

. This measurement is essential to knowing the quality of water that can be harmful to fish. pH is the number of free hydrogen ions in the water. pH levels range from 0 to 14; 7 is neutral, below 7 is alkaline, and above 7 is acidic. The ph buffer does wonders in keeping the water balance.

Why pond pH swings?

A pond is a natural wildlife. The photosynthesis triggers the pH to fluctuate. All plant life in the pond, including algae, use the sun"s energy to convert inorganic carbon into inorganic carbon. When carbon dioxide breaks down in water, it creates the carbonic acid. This acid causes the pH to drop.

Next is respiration. All animals in the pond respire that contributes to the accumulation of CO2. The increased respiration makes the pond more acidic.

Another serious perpetrator is the excess ammonia. Fish contributes to serious ammonia levels. Ammonia that is broken down by nitrifying bacteria forms into nitrite (NO2), the bacteria forms two oxygen ams on hydrogen. The hydrogen atoms become free that makes the Ph level to fall. As ammonia is always present in the pond due to fish waste, the pond has always the tendency to become acidic, which should always be taken care of.

How to Achieve pH Balance

First, test your pond water"s pH level. The level should be between 6.5 and 7.5. you can determine if the pH is high if the level is 7.8 and above. Low levels are below 6.3.

If pH is too low, you may purchase pH up. This raises the pH level slowly without harming fish and plants. It also neutralizes acid compounds and other chemicals such as soil runoff and decomposing waste that cause low pH. Pond down and Pond Stabilizer are also available as solutions to certain pH level. Add one teaspoon per 50 gallons of water in your pond.

Use the pond buffer stabilizer sparingly, only when needed and keep as much as quarter cup per 200 gallons of water. This can only be used after you have lowered the pond"s pH level. When the pond achieve a good ph level, you may use the buffer stabilizer for the next 2 to 3 days to keep the pH balanced. After 2 to 3 days, expect the pond water stable even without the pond buffer stabilizer.

The peat moss does a great job in balancing the pond"s pH level. This can be added to the pond anytime but this is more effective when there is high pH level. Use this occasionally because it may mess with other aquatic plants. Place the peat moss neat the water fall or filtration system. This will help filter the bad bacteria from attacking the pond. Put six inches of peat moss in those areas and allow it to grow. This also at the same time absorbs the calcium and magnesium from the water.
