What To Do When Your Paving Slab Is Too High Or Too Low?

The concrete slab for a patio and sidewalk may sink or lift over time

. This leads to a slab being too low or too high to the level of the ground. Proper levelling off the ground is required prior to laying a paving slab. If you see that your paving slab has raised up or sunk into the ground, then there are various ways to fix the problem.

Sunken Slab

The size of the concrete slab will dictate the option you will use. If you have a small slab, then you can prise it out of the ground. This is done by digging around the slab and gently lifting using a pry bar. This needs to be done carefully so you do not crack the slab. Remove the slab and examine the base and see if it has settled. You can add and level sand to raise the level of the slab.

If the slab it too big to remove, then use a concrete saw to cut away the sunken section. Add more sand and then replace the slab. You may also need to add gravel or pea stones to the base. This will raise the level of the cut section and make it level with the remaining slab. Fill in cracks between the cut section and the existing section with sand.

A sunken slab can also be raised using a veneer method. Roughen up the surface of the slab using a disc grinder. This is needed to ensure the new concrete will properly adhere. Drill a series of holes into your slab using a power drill with a masonry bit. This will anchor the new concrete. Pour new concrete onto the slab and then level it out.

Raised Slab

Lifting that occurs with a concrete slab is often caused by tree roots. If you have a large tree that is near the slab, then moving roots will cause the slab to lift. One way to repair a raised slab is to grind it down or shave the top to make it level. A specialized cutting machine is needed to grind down concrete to get it level with the existing slab. Another option is to cut away a raised section of slab and shave down the root. If you only plan to shave down the concrete, then one-half of the thickness can be ground down.

If one concrete slab is higher than another, then one option is to make a ramp. This is done by adding a wedge of new concrete to smooth out the raised edge. Creating a ramp will allow strollers, bikes, and a wheelchair to easily roll over the slab. This is the easiest option for fixing a raised slab.
