However when you happen to be doing this over and over again around four to five times, stop it and then try to look for the exact location of the center stair stringer using a stud finder. This still may or may not work but you can always use a hammer and try tapping on the stair tread.

When you hit on the stair tread, try to listen for a particular sound since the stair tread is located on an area wherein the sound may seem solid rather than hearing a hollow sound. Try screwing into these areas and hopefully your problem will be solved.
