What To Expect From Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is a procedure designed to surgically enhance the breasts
. This is done to improve the size of the breasts by inserting implants. There are many reasons to consider having this procedure. You may be hoping to improve the way you look after pregnancy. You may be seeking to overcome the loss of one or both of your breasts after a disease or injury. In other cases, it can help you to balance differences in size from one to the other. Some individuals just want to have larger breasts, and this option allows for that.
What Happens in This Procedure?
When you get breast augmentation done, the doctor will insert implants under or on your muscle tissue, under the skin that creates the enhanced look. This procedure occurs as you are under general anesthesia. You will not feel pain and you will not know what is happening during the procedure. The doctor will make an incision in a hidden area, in most situations, so that the scarring is not obvious. For example, this may be done under the breast or it may be in the armpit. Then, he or she will slide the implant into place under the skin. Some products are designed to be filled after insertion. After this is done, the doctor will stitch up the incision and apply a tape-like product to encourage healing.
In Recovery
After the procedure, you will be out of the surgical area and in an area to recover. Most of the time, you will spend a night in the hospital but in some cases you can be released to a loved one or to a surgical recovery center. You will initially feel tired and sore, though this will improve over time. You may have some bruising, but you will be mentally alert and capable of functioning. Your doctor may provide you with a prescription for pain medications and antibiotics, depending on the outcome of your procedure.
Healing
It will take several weeks for you to become fully "normal" again in terms of your physical activity levels and even then, your doctor may discourage you from heavy lifting for several more weeks. You will need to spend some time with monitored aid when you first come home from the hospital. You will have limited ability to move around easily. Within a week, though, you should be able to do many of the things you used to do.
Be sure to keep your doctor at close hand during recovery. Breast augmentation is a great way to improve the way you look, but only if you heal properly. For that to happen, you really do need to focus on recovery.
