What To Expect From Breast Lifts
Each year, millions of people consult with cosmetic surgeons to discuss correcting the appearance of the breasts and surrounding tissue
. This is a concern for both men and women, and one that's likely to grow more important with age. While there are a number of procedures that can be performed to help improve the appearance of the chest area, one of the simplest and most common is the breast lifts.
Known by the clinical term mastopexy, the purpose of breast lifts is to raise and firm the appearance of the breasts. This is accomplished by removing excess skin---often acquired as a result of age, weight loss, or having children--- and tightening the surrounding tissue. This gives the breasts a firmer, younger look, and can be done alone or in conjunction with augmentation surgery.
Before determining whether or not a patient is an ideal candidate for lift surgery, it's required that she have a thorough consultation and physical examination with an experienced, reputable surgeon. Many patients head into a consultation seeking mastopexy, when the results they seek are better achieved through other procedures; most commonly, through the use of silicon implants. The typical candidate for mastopexy is between the ages of 35-55, has experienced a dramatic change in weight or level of physical fitness, has had children, or is dissatisfied with drooping tissue in the breast area. In addition, the patient should be in relatively good physical condition and strong enough to undergo general anesthesia and recovery without the risk of severe side effects.
A breast lift is performed through the use of small incisions that allow the surgeon to reshape, lift, and tighten the skin, as well as correct any abnormalities in the shape or appearance of the breasts. Following the procedure, the incisions will be closed using sutures, and dressings and bandages will be applied to the area. A patient will often have a small, thin tube below the area of incision, in order to promote proper draining of the area and prevent infection. Most people are required to take 10-14 days off from work or school in order to rest and heal properly, though more time is recommended if the incisions are slow to heal, if infection occurs, or if the patient has a job that requires physical exertion or heavy lifting. Plenty of rest and medication make the recovery process much easier, and a majority of clients report being extremely satisfied with the choice to have breast lifts.
