What To Expect From Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty, more commonly referred to as eyelid surgery

, is performed to get rid of puffy bags under the eyes and excess, baggy skin around the eyelids. The eyes are one of the first areas on the face to show the signs of aging. Eyelid surgery on the upper lids can tighten and smooth droopy, baggy eyelids. Lower eyelid surgery can remove excess fat pockets and skin from the eye area to provide a fresh, renewed appearance.

What to expect before eyelid surgery

Before eyelid surgery you should research the procedure to find out if eyelid surgery is right for you. Next you will want to find a cosmetic or plastic surgeon with proven results. Talk to your surgeon about your concerns and ask to see before and after photos of patients they have treated with eyelid surgery. During your consultation your surgeon should discuss the details of your specific case and your desired goals. You should leave the consultation knowing what to expect from treatment.

What to expect during treatment

Eyelid surgery is usually performed in your surgeons clinical office rather than at a hospital. The surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia. As it is a day patient procedure you will be able to go home the same as day your surgery. However, you should make arrangements for someone to pick you up and drive you home after surgery. Upper and lower eyelid surgery may be performed at the same time or you may choose to do only upper or lower. Eyelid surgery may also be performed simultaneously with a face lift or brow lift surgery.

Upper blepharoplasty

With upper eyelid surgery you should expect small incisions to be made at the creases of the eyes. Your surgeon will then cut and remove excess baggy skin and fat tissues. Swelling usually subsides within one to two weeks and the incision scars fade within a few months.

Lower blepharoplasty

Lower eyelid surgery removes the puffy bags under the eyes. In most cases the incisions are made just below the lower lash lines on the outside of the eyelids. In some cases, particularly if excess skin is absent but there are excess fat pockets to be removed, the incisions may be made inside the lower eyelids. This is known as a transconjunctival approach and is often used in younger women or when excess skin is absent. Swelling usually subsides within one to two weeks and the incision scars fade within a few months. If the transconjunctival approach is used, the incision scars will not be visible as they are inside the eyelids.

What to expect after treatment

Pain and discomfort is generally minimal and can be managed with oral medication. The sutures are removed after 7 to 10 days. Contact lenses and make-up can be worn after suture removal. Swelling and bruising may be present for up to two weeks. Patients usually heal within two weeks and at that time begin to enjoy the full benefits of their eyelid surgery. Laser resurfacing can also be used as a follow-up to eyelid surgery to further rejuvenate the skin and reduce the appearance of aging and wrinkles.
