What To Look For In A Family Photographer
It's that time again: to find someone to update your family portraits
. We've all been there with the headache of planning, the hassle to get everyone there on time, and looking semi-decent with clothes. There are many family photographers out there, so how do you choose which one is best for you? To minimize the hassle and to ensure the best results, there are a couple of things you need to consider when searching for that perfect fit.
First and most importantly, ask if yourself if they good with kids. Someone that has experience with children in getting them to pay attention and smile is ten times better than someone who throws people together and snaps a picture. It makes a great difference if your photographer knows how to make the picture-taking process a fun one for the kids. Look at the family pictures of previous sittings. Are the kids smiling ever? Are they paying attention? This fact can make your images go from pretty good to fantastic.
Secondly, whoever you choose needs to be able to pose any type of family, whether big or small, in a pleasing fashion. No one should be a totem pole of the other (stacked heads). Spacing should be close, but not lopsided. The group shots should be as symmetrical as possible. That's not to say creative, spaced out shots aren't good, but there just needs to be a balance. It may not be the first thing you think of, but posing is crucial.
Third, do they give you a choice for location? One of the best things about a family portrait is being able to choose the backdrop. A good family photographer should be able to give you multiple options for your portraits so you can get that certain look you're going for. Do you want nature with trees and water or a field with mountains in the back or old, rustic buildings? There should be many options so they can capture your style.
Lastly, will this person be able to capture your kids' personalities as well as their adorable smiles? A great session should have a mix of both. Creative, candid shot of your kids are always a nice touch as well. It's always cute to see your little one staring intensely at a flower. Those are priceless moments that the best photographers will capture for you.
Now it should be a little easier to find that perfect someone to take your family portraits. If they have these qualities, your experience and results from your session will be amazing!
