What To Look For When Getting A Home Security System

For most of our home improvement services we pretty much know what to look for when hiring a contractor

. If youre landscaping, you find someone who has done an amazing job somewhere else and hire him based on the fact that his work speaks for itself. Or some of us will get recommendations from friends or family that had a great job done in their homes. In fact that goes for almost any home improvement because the job well done is all we need to see to make a decision on who to hire. However, when it comes to home security you might be tempted at looking at the final product and making a decision based solely on that, and that would be a critical mistake.

When it comes to getting a home security system, you definitely need to consider a few things before making a decision. On the surface most companies appear to all be the same but nothing could be further from the truth. Many people basically go with a company that has a well known name without really knowing anything about the company and that is sometimes a problem if you know nothing about the company. ADT Security has established a brand name that everyone recognizes and is probably the most respected company in the industry. So in an effort to assist in helping make the right decision Ive compiled the following list of things to consider before signing up with someone.

One of the first things to look for in choosing the right company is making sure they are truly a state licensed contractor. Notice I said that they need to be truly licensed because most companies out there use someone elses license because they dont have their own. This is crucial because the person that is in your home installing your home security system really is not qualified to install the system. To make sure the company is truly state licensed simply make sure that the license holder is also the owner of the company or that the state license holder is not working for someone else also. Ensuring the company is truly licensed will put you at ease knowing that the people actually doing the work are qualified to do so.

Next make sure that home security company you are considering hiring have their own installers and not sub contractors. This might seem insignificant at first but really matters in getting a good quality job done. On of the most popular trend in recent times is using sub contractors to perform the installations. This has become popular because many times it is more cost effective to the companies than hiring full time installers. The problem with this however is that these sub contractors get paid by the job because they are not company employees. What this translates to you the homeowner is that the person installing the home security system in your home has no ties to the company they are installing for. The faster the job is done the faster they get paid and for the most part hey really dont care about taking short cuts on your system. The use of sub contractors is also a problem because for the most part they are not covered under the companies workers comp policy and that could be a disaster for you in the event the installer gets hurt on the job. That person would come directly after you, the homeowner, if hes not covered.

Lastly, make sure the company you are hiring uses a central monitoring station that is U.L. Certified. This is a very important thing because Underwriters Laboratory actually regulates the central monitoring stations that are listed and certified. What makes this so important is that if the central station is not certified then the service you will receive will just not be adequate. For those companies that are U.L. listed, they actually have an inspector come in once a year and perform an inspection to ensure you will get the kind of monitoring service you need. U.L checks the subscriber records versus the employee records and enforces a ration that will ensure you are provided a normal response when your alarm activates. They also check and regulate how many back up phone lines are required as well as how many back up generators are needed.

While there are many other things to consider, I believe these are the top three concerns to have when choosing the right home security provider. If you follow just these three recommendations then you are on your way to finding the right company.
