What To See And Do On A First Visit To The Lake District

Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful places in the United Kingdom

, the Lake District is an area of land in the North West part of the country that covers an area of approximately 885 square miles and features some stunning parts of picturesque beauty.

The Lake District, however, is more than just an area of natural beauty and the following 5 points are prime examples of popular attractions and reasons why people visit the Lake District area.

1. Known most famously for creating the children's book 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit', Beatrix Potter, although born in London, was a great admirer of the Lake District and aside from holidaying their in her younger days, she purchased a property in the area in her 40s.

Today, Hill Top Farm, the property that she purchased, is open to visitors as part of the National Trust and makes for a wonderful day out, whether you're an avid fan of Beatrix Potter and her whole life or simply have an interest from your childhood in her published works.

2. There are well over 80 individual lakes encompassed within the Lake District area, varying massively in size in width, length and depth. The largest of them all (by area), Windermere, is the biggest by far, covering an extensive area of approximately 5.7 square miles according to the Environment Agency.

In addition to being the largest lake in the Lake District (as well as in England), it is also seen as the most attractive to tourists, with various hotels, restaurants and individual attractions within the local area.

Windermere is also visited by people so that they can see the place where Sir Henry Seagrave set a new world record for the fastest speed on water in June 1930.

3. Aside from lakes, the Lake District also encompasses a variety of different mountainous areas and includes the highest peak in England, Scafell Pike, at 3,209 feet tall. This part of the Lake District may be suitable for particularly experienced walkers, but there are various other areas that are fantastic walking routes for walkers of all abilities.

One of the reasons why so many people walk in the Lake District is to take in the surroundings and understand what the influence was for some of the country's most famous poets, such as William Wordsworth, who was heavily influenced by the Lake District until his death in 1850.

4. Where there is masses of water there is more often than not copious amounts of fish, making fishing without doubt one of the most popular reasons for visiting the area.

As some of the lakes in the Lake District feature some particularly rare fish, such as the vendance, the Environment Agency put in place in 2002 various laws to ensure the fish population levels are maintained, such as not being allowed to use freshwater fish as bait in more than a dozen of the lakes. Most would agree that whilst this does have its drawbacks, those who truly appreciate the fish will be more than willing to oblige.
