What Type Of Paperwork Do I Need To Ship From The Us To Canada?
So many people from the US do business with people in Canada
, that it doesn't really seen like any sort of a big deal to do business with our neighbors to the north. While it might not be a really big deal, there are still some things that you have to worry about when using courier services to ship your goods to Canada that aren't concerns when you're only shipping within the United States. There are a few extra costs involved with shipping into another country and some paperwork considerations that you're going to have to think about.
The good news is that the paperwork isn't usually too onerous, and something that you shouldn't have too much trouble making sure is in order. First, you're going to have to fill out some paperwork with your courier company that is going to go beyond what you would normally see for domestic shipments. That is because you're going to be arranging for some extra services with them; primarily that of a customs broker, which you normally wouldn't have to pay for. This is one of those extra costs we mentioned earlier as well. The other primary extra cost that you may come up against is that of the taxes in the province you are shipping into.
Beyond that paperwork with your courier company, the documentation should be easy to assemble. The two things that you're going to need with every shipment are a BOL, and the commercial invoice. The BOL should be something that your courier company should prepare, and the commercial invoice is something that you're going to have to include with the shipment. Remember that it doesn't matter how small or insignificant your order might be; you're still going to need these documents.
It is when you get into larger shipments, and into the shipment of goods covered under trade agreements that things get more complicated. There are some types of shipment which might need a NAFTA certificate, for example, and others which might need an import/export license of some kind. The scopes of these documents are beyond this article, but suffice it to say that you should always discuss the required paperwork for a shipment with your courier company prior to planning your cargo pickup.
These documentation requirements are important. Improper documentation has many times in the past resulted in packages being turned away from the border, something you definitely do not want to encounter.
