What Will You Get In A Hard Disk Upgrade?

Getting a hard disk upgrade may sound no-brainer for those experts

. Like, if you run out of space for your hard drive, the next thing you can think of is to add another hard drive, correct? Well, to make it happen, you have to buy a new hard drive with 160 GB capacity. It will only cost you less than $100. And we that you may need to partition the hard disk to your desired space allocation. However, during the process, there might be some pitfalls that you may come across which will be discussed down below.

Generally, if you believe to have a hard disk failure because of lack of virtual memory, the usual thing that people would do is add a new hard disk to give support for additional space. However, this is not an assurance that it is the main fix of the problem. If you need a new hard drive, you have to make sure to transfer the files first from the original drive to the new one. And when this is done, during the transportation process, there is a bigger chance that files will be place in wrong folders making other application to find the files or data in wrong places or folders. As a result, people will have to replace the hard disk rather than getting a new one.

Retail hard disk upgrade kit are available in any computer shop. And as part of the full package, it does have a software which is provided by the manufacturer that could actually create an exact copy of the old hard disk to the new hard disk. In this case, the new hard disk will also be bootable. Wonderful, right? And moving files or data will be easier this time but it will just take some good time for it. One advantage of this software is that it will delete the data of your old hard disk, it will retain it and it is quite secured even if the drive jumpers will be moved. Or alternatively, one can use the Ghost, a known utility to make image copy of the old hard drive to a new drive.

With the exception of the new SATA drives today, IDE hard drives are thought to be backwards compatible. It has not issues of it runs in old controllers as it could support their transfer speed. So getting upgrades on hard disk is not a problem at all. With the right family of technology (ATA instead of SCSI), compatibility will not be a setback if one decides to have hard disk upgrades. Nonetheless, those laptops and notebook may not support this much as they have BIOS limitations on how many drives it could support.

The drawback of simply replacing the hard drive is that you can't have two drives to run at the same in the computer or one that will require you to have a 3.5" to 5.25" frame kit if you want to add another drive. For laptops or portables, replacing a hard disk could be challenging. Aside from that, you have the possibility of getting power supply issues. So you could continue to copy the existing drive to the new one, you need to borrow the power supply lead of the other drive. And after that, you can take the lead off the old hard drive which gets removed later on.
