What You Can Do To Deal With A Lost Tooth
Whether it is caused by a sudden injury or by years of decay
, having a tooth removed or knocked out can be a very stressful occurrence. If you ever find yourself in a situation like this, it is important that you remember that your dentist has the capability to fully restore your smile. In fact, your dentist has several effective options that can replace a lost tooth and restore your smile.
Dental Implant And Crown
The longest lasting option your dentist has is to replace your lost tooth by using a dental implant. An implant is a replacement tooth root that is directly attached to your jawbone. Once an implant is put in, it acts as an anchor for a dental crown that is then attached to it. To put an implant in, your dentist will first anesthetize the area and then securely fasten the implant to your jawbone. You will then need to wait between six and twelve weeks for your gums to heal around the implant, further securing it in place. After this, an impression will be taken to create a crown, which will then be attached to the implant. Since an implant becomes a functional part of your mouth, it can last as long as 25 years or in some cases an entire lifetime.
Dental Bridges
Another popular way to replace a lost tooth is through the use of a dental bridge. A bridge is an artificial replacement tooth that is held in place on either side by dental crowns. To put a bridge in, your dentist will first begin by reducing the size of the two teeth that will receive dental crowns. After this, he or she will take an impression of the area in order to create a dental bridge that will fit in perfectly to your bite. After wearing a temporary bridge on your teeth for two to three weeks, your permanent bridge will arrive from the dental lab. Your dentist will do a final check to make sure the coloring and fit are correct. If they are, he or she will use a special cement to permanent attach the bridge to your teeth. Bridges are known to last about 15 years or longer in some cases.
Dentures
If you have lost all or many of your teeth, your dentist may recommend that you get fitted for a set of dentures. If you have only lost several of your teeth, you will most likely receive a set of partial dentures. Partial dentures use a combination of your natural teeth and several artificial ones to restore your smile. If you have lost many or all of your teeth, you will probably receive a complete set of removable dentures. These replace all of your teeth with a set of dentures that will look exactly like natural teeth. No one will be able to tell that your teeth are not completely natural.
