What You Can Do to Keep Safe

Regardless of where one lives, each night while watching the evening news, you can count on several stories telling how a crime was committed. Sometimes it may be a burglary, sometimes arson, other times a rape and others a murder and that is only the tip of the iceberg. Sad to say, this is much more common than any of us want to admit, but that does not in any way alleviate us from taking responsibility for our own personal safety and home security. There are many steps we can take to provide safety and security for ourselves and those we love.

When it comes to personal safety, there is much to be said for simply being alert. If out walking or shopping, note the scenery around you. Is there sufficient lighting? What about shrubbery that could be used by a predator as a cover? Do you feel as though you are being watched or perhaps you are uncomfortable with walking past a specific store, alley way, or group of people? There's no apology necessary when it comes to being safe. If you are returning to your vehicle after shopping, a meeting etcand don't feel safe or perhaps the spot you parked in is not as well lit as you had anticipated, then go back get a security guard or co-worker to walk you. It is also wise to be paying attention as you walk to you vehicle. Have your keys ready in your hand, then take few moments to look through the windows into your vehicle to ensure you have not "picked-up" any extra passengers. It may seem paranoid, but it's always better to be than sorry. When out shopping be sure that when you return to your vehicle that your hands are not so full as to impede quick movement. If you have to drop what you are carrying to make fast get away-do it- things can be replaced.

When it comes to being safe at home, one of the most important actions you can take is to have a home security system installed. There are many choices on the market ranging in cost from $15 a month to around $50 depending on what features you select and the home security provider. However, basic features to plan on are break-in protection, window and door sensors, carbon monoxide monitoring, smoke detection/fire alarms and the ability to activate the system even if you are not on the premises. Of course, just having a home security system is not enough-you have to turn it on whether you are home or not!

Additional steps you can take to make your home less attractive to a criminal are keeping your yard neat and shrubbery trimmed so that it is lower than the windows, not leaving the packages for high-dollar purchase at the end of the drive or on the porch (they advertise what's inside), letting mail or deliveries pile up in your mailbox and teaching your children to never open the door to someone they don't know. Regarding your yard, having motion sensing lights, security cameras and the sign for your home monitoring company prominently displayed lets others know that your home will not be an easy target.

These are just a few ways you can do your part to keep yourself and those you love safe. If you are looking for an area
