What You Have To Realize About Childhood Obesity
In terms of health-related problems, time is an important factor
. This is a fancy way of saying that the bad symptoms don't start showing up right away--they take a while to become apparent. Still, the stage definitely gets set for later on in life when a child is obese. Even so, kids usually don't have as many medical problems result from obesity because they are still young. The condition still filters into problems discovered later in life though. Stroke, high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and liver disease are some of the worse problems you can face.
Type II diabetes is a real thread to kids, teens and adults who suffer from obesity. It's not a mystery why this condition develops in these situations. What makes this different from Type I diabetes is that it is, sometimes, preventable. Primary risk factors for this kind of diabetes are weight issues like obesity and a prolonged sedentariness. An obese body is under more pressure to produce insulin than a body that is not obese. This is because there are more cells that need it. Then, as time goes on, the body starts to resist the insulin and that's when Type II occurs.
The cardiovascular system is where most of the serious risks will develop. It is known that obese children have elevated serum cholesterol and generally fatty blood profiles which include triglycerides. Because these heart diseases start early in life, they need to be intervened immediately. If you are a very young person then think about having to take medication to counter your high cholesterol. Accepting the known side effects is something an adult has to do when they take these medications.
When taking this medication it can be complicated for a young child or a teen.
Researchers still don't know if there is a direct correlation between obesity and early onset puberty which is more common in girls than in boys. Of course, there is a fair amount of common sense involved in looking at what we know already. For example, we know that kids who are obese and overweight grow faster and enter puberty earlier. It is a situation, though, in which definite causation needs to be defined. While this is obviously not that serious a threat as the other obesity related problems, there are definitely serious implications that accompany abnormally young ages for the onset of puberty.
Obviously, by the time they have reached this condition, these kids are at a tremendous social and physical disadvantage. We all know how hard it is to lose weight and that you have to be very determined and have lots of support to do it. Parents and friends need to offer as much support as they can. Kids and young adults are resilient and have an easier time bouncing back once a healthy direction has been taken. Of course, it depends on whether or not any medical conditions are present.
