What You Need To Know About Noodling Catfish

Noodling for catfish can be thrilling, dangerous and is considered by some to be a non-sport way to catch a fish

. However, the states that do allow catfish noodling have some very interesting people with some interesting stories behind catching the catfish with their hands. You have to know the water, your surroundings and the technique used to catch the larger catfish this way. You will also need to know the laws about noodling. The states that allow noodling have some regulations that you need to follow or the fish could be costly.

The Water

You will need to know the water where the catfish are found. You cannot just walk into any water and expect to find a catfish by noodling. If you are unsure of the area, you should talk to some locals that have experience with noodling and the waters to do it in before you start. You might see guys fishing and catching catfish in one lake, but that doesn't mean that you can legally noodle for catfish in the same water or at the same time. Check the water regulations and then chat with the locals, who could also offer to guide you on your first time.

The Surroundings

When you are in the water, you must be completely aware of the surroundings. This is especially true if the water is home to snapping turtles, water snakes or any other creature of the water that could easily hurt you. Test the waters floor so you know how it is structured. Are there large rocks or high and low spots in the water where you will be hunting the catfish. The last thing that you need to happen when noodling is to lose your footing when fighting the fish.

The Laws

There are 11 states that will allow noodling as of 2010. These states include Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois, Kansas, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Louisiana and Kentucky. Although the states allow noodling, you must find out how each particular state regulates noodling. Some states will allow you to place artificial nesting boxes under water to attract the fish and some only allow noodling during certain months. You will need to contact the DNR to see what you need to know or do before trying your hand at catfish noodling since you are going to attract attention from those around the water when you set out to catch a fish with your hands.
