What You Need To Know About Your Car
The wheels of a car aren't the same as the tires
, but of course they are intimately connected. There are at least five things a car owner should know about their cars wheels.
They Should Be Balanced and Aligned
The wheels should be balanced and aligned when needed, by a professional. The two types of wheel balancing are static and dynamic.
Static balancing means the even distribution of weight around the cars axle. The car owner can tell if the wheels need to be statically balanced if a wheel rotates by itself when the car is lifted up from the ground. The rotation happens because one part the wheel is heavier than the rest of it. A car mechanic can apply tire weights and balance the wheel out.Dynamic balancing is about the even distribution of weight along the cars spindle. Wheels that aren't dynamically balanced wobble and wear out more quickly. Though both static and dynamic balancing can be complex, they shouldn't cost that much to do.
If the driver notices that the wheels are misaligned, they should take them to be aligned right away. The front wheels are the wheels that are usually misaligned. Misalignments are more likely if the car is hard driven, with screaming getaways and stops, slamming into curbs when parking, frequent hitting of potholes and rutted roads, accidents and years of wear and tear.
The Caster of the Wheels
The caster of the wheels is the position of the wheel in relation to its spindle support arm. If the caster is right, the wheels track in a straight line and won't weave or wobble at high speeds.
The Camber of the Wheels
Camber is the inward or outward tilt at the top of the wheel when the owner looks at it from the front of the car. If the wheels aren't adjusted, the tires will wear out quickly and make the car hard to drive.
The Wheels Toe In or Toe Out
A good sign in a wheel is when the tire is a little toed in, or pigeon toed, when the car standing still. This keeps the wheel from being forced too far out when the car is being driven at high speed. This results in a straight track. Toe out is the opposite, and is not desirable. Toe out makes the car hard to steer.
The Wheels Turning Radius
The turning radius is the relation of one front wheel to the other when the car turns. If the cars steering arm is bent, the wheels will have to be aligned. The car owner can tell if the turning radius is off if the tires squeal when they turn.
