What You Should Expect After Lasik Eye Surgery

If you've been brave enough to sign the consent forms and are on your way to becoming

free from glasses or contact lenses, then my congratulations to you. Nevertheless, you should be aware of what to expect after LASIK eye surgery as there have been numerous reports of operations gone wrong, either due to infections or the lack of experience of the eye surgeon, and many other complications that have yet to be resolved, such as an incompletely healed flap and dry eyes.

Immediately after LASIK eye surgery, you should feel your eye (or eyes) itching, burning, redness or a feeling of something in your eye. Basically, general ocular discomfort including blurry or hazy vision right after the surgery. You may be tempted to rub your eye, but this is definitely not something you want to do. The last thing you want is to inadvertently dislodge the corneal flap, which will lead to even more LASIK complications. These uncomfortable feelings should be treated with some kind of mild reliever or pain killer given to you by the eye surgeon post surgery.

Other symptoms of discomfort that you may experience are glare, starbursts, haloes, a sensitivity to light and ghosting or double vision. All of these symptoms should subside within the first few days of surgery. If these symptoms after LASIK eye surgery get progressively worse or severe, then you should consult with your doctor immediately.

Even if you don't experience such adverse side effects, you should still see your doctor within 24 to 48 hours after the initial surgery and then at regular intervals for at least another 6 months. Your doctor may give you eye drops to prevent eye infections, inflammation as well as artificial tears to lubricate the eye. If you wear contact lenses, you should not wear them just yet, even if your vision is still blurry.

You should also wait 1 to 3 days before commencing any non-contact sports and up to at least 4 weeks for strenuous contact sports, such as boxing, karate, football etc. It is especially important after LASIK eye surgery that you keep your operated eye protected, as the eye surgeon should have given an eye shield to you.

In order to prevent infections from affecting the eye, you should wait up to 2 weeks before using lotions, creams or make-up around the eye. It is also advised that you scrub your eyelashes for a period of time after LASIK eye surgery. Another precaution is to avoid swimming in hot tubs or whirlpools for about 1 to 2 months.

As you can see, there are many things to keep in mind when contemplating what life after LASIK eye surgery would be like. It is always best to stay on the safe side of things, lest you should lose sight of your own sensibilities.
