This microsurgery requires your surgeon to be very precise and often takes several hours just to complete the reattachment process. If you are thinking about having one portion of your bosom reconstructed, the procedure can take up to five hours, for the whole bosom it can take up to 8 hours.

Even though the risks for this procedure are pretty low, there is also the additional complication of if the blood vessels do not take to the reattachment. When that happens, the transplanted tissue will start to experience necrosis which is tissue death. This means that your surgery was not successful and you will want to talk to your surgeon about other options. The risk for is complication is relatively low. You should also be aware that depending on your body and your particular situation, you may not be able to experience as much sensation as you were accustomed to before you had your bosom surgically removed due to illness. Your recovery time is significantly reduced since your abdominal muscles were left alone, your expected recovery can take anywhere from one to two months.

The DIEP Ism Flap procedure is a very complicated surgery that very few surgeons are qualified to perform. That is why you should use your time before you make a decision to see several qualified breast reconstruction surgeons and discuss what your options are.
