Materials needed are epoxy resin, Plexiglas, glazing compound, glazier points, oil based primer, acrylic latex paint, weatherstripping, silicon spray and a sash cord or chain. The tools needed are a pry bar, a flat-head screwdriver, a heat gun, a utility knife, a putty knife, natural bristle brushes for oil-based primers and synthetic filament brushes for the top coat. Wear safety goggles and gloves to protect from glass and wood splinters.

If the window gets stuck or will not budge, there is probably a problem with the rope and sash system. A new coat of paint and sealer needs to be applied every year though it seldom is causing wet rot and shrinkage of the wood. Remove the sash and strip off old paint and putty. Clean joints with a screwdriver and glue with epoxy before repainting. Free the glass panels, strip off the old putty and waterproof with new putty. Coat the frame with primer and bed the glass. Insert the points and tool the putty. Now rehang the sash allowing for two days for the epoxy, primer, paint and putty to dry thoroughly.

Problems result if the window refuses to budge or remain open. You will need to remove both cords at the same time. You do not want to have to re-do the job the next week because you only changed one cord the first time.

Once this beading is removed from between the two sashes, take out the small bit of wood at the bottom. The lead weights will be under this. Remove all dust and debris with a flat headed screwdriver.

To re-thread the cord or chain, attached a string to a small weight and thread it over the pulley, dropping the weight into the jamb. Attach the cord to the other end of the string and pull it into position. The cord can be tied in a figure eight knot to the hole at the top of the weight. If there is any resistance, oil the pulley thoroughly.
