Graphic Design and web design are two different aspects of design. Graphic design isrelated to print media, while web design is associated to the Internet. Though both weband graphic design use images, text, etc for creating suitable designs, there is a hugedifference in their usage. Here are some of the points on which the design typesdiffer:

Quality of Image

More commonly known as resolution, the image quality is measured in pixels. The imagesused in web design should not be more than 72 ppi i.e. pixels per inch. This isbecause, the higher the ppi of an image, the more time it will take to load. This inturn is not good for the website.The resolution of the images used in graphic design is generally bigger in size ascompared to the resolution of the images used in web design.

GIFs and JPEGs

Image files can be saved in two formats, either JPEG or GIF. JPEG i.e. JointPhotographers Experts Group format is ideal for images which need to be printed. Smalldetails and color of the photographs and graphics which have a mixture of colors can beretained while using JPEG format.GIF i.e. Graphics Interchange Format is perfect for web designing. This format isuseful for images with low color configuration and those which will be only viewed onscreen. The GIF format can show up to 256 colors and transparent backgrounds can alsobe used.

Fonts

The usage of the fonts for web design and graphic design are not the same. In graphic

design, you can use any font without the need to worry about how the fonts will be

displayed to the user.

On the other hand in web design, the font used by the designer will be viewable to the

audience only if that particular font is installed in their computer. So it is good touse fonts like Helvetica, Arial, Verdana, etc which are displayed by almost all the webbrowsers.

Thus graphic designers, who want to go for web designing and vice-versa, must take care

of the differences and it will become easier for them to work accordingly.
