What is Manual Handling Training?

Manual handling training can be defined as a group of courses created to reduce the number of workplace injuries and to make sure that the employees understand the laws regarding manual handling restrictions that were set up in the UK in 1992. There are different training programs specific to different industries but in each of the course the series of safety issues remain same.

In simple words, manual handling is the process of lifting and carrying the objects around the workplace. The objects may include anything including a box or a human to much heavier objects throughout the day.

It is obvious that any job that involves heavy labor or manual material handling may include a high risk of getting injured on the job. Manual material handling includes lifting, climbing, pushing pulling and pivoting, all of which pose the risk of injury to the back. Manual handling is incorporated in 1992 by the Manual Handling Operations Regulations. These regular do not specify a maximum weight that a person can carry. They focus on the assessment of tasks that involve some techniques so that these techniques can be improved to do the task safely.

The manual handling training course includes specific techniques to carry out various tasks in a specific industry.

How to use mechanical aids

Handling risk factors

The process of getting injured from improper or unsafe manual handling

Proper and safe manual handling techniques

Making the technique adaptive to the respective environment and task

Assessment from time to time to bring out new ways to complete the task

The need for manual handling training is necessary for companies due to government regulations established in 1974. These regulations indicate that companies must work to make sure that the employees know how to adequately lift, carry and set down items in a safe manner.
