What is Polyurethane Coating?

Polyurethane Coatings are frequently utilized as Corrosion Protection Coatings for

Water Transmission Pipelines, Steel Storage Tanks, Rail Cars and Truck Undercarriages, and many other steel structures. This type coating is growing in popularity as a Pipeline Coating because it is a primerless Direct-to-Metal (DTM) application with excellent service life. Polyurethane Coatings are considered fast set coatings, drying within a few minutes of application through a Graco Reactor proportioning unit. The coating imparts an excellent corrosion resistant film, essentially impermeable to water. It is a hard, yet flexible coating film that is both abrasion resistant and impact resistant. Polyurethane Coatings and Linings are available for potable water pipes, and will comply with ANSI / NSF 61 for Drinking Water.

Polyurethane Coatings are also utilized to protect wood surfaces and polyurethane and EPS foam substrates, as well. When coated onto wood or foam substrates, the polyurethane coating affords protection against water damage and gives the foam or wood protection against scratches, dents and wear and tear.

Often times, polyurea coatings are utilized in these same types of applications, or a coating formulation comprised of both Polyurea and Polyurethane is utilized these coatings are referred to as Hybrids. Polyurea is typically chosen for applications that are field applied, and where the conditions may be extremely humid. The chemical reaction that occurs to form a polyurea coating is less sensitive to humid applications conditions than is typically found with a polyurethane coating. Polyurea coatings make excellent roof coatings, and secondary containment linings.

Polyurethanes coatings are the reaction product of Isocyantes and Polyols. This same basic chemistry is widely utilized to make other types of commonly used manufactured parts, such as furniture and car seat cushions, mattresses, shoe soles, insulation foam, and glues and sealants.

Polyurea coatings are the reaction product of Isocyanates and Amines. This basic chemistry is generally used for industrial coatings, spray-in truck bed liners, and construction joint fillers.

Polyurethane Coatings and Linings are well established within the industrial marketplace as high performance Corrosion Resistant Coatings, and Polyurea Coatings continue to find more and more applications, making Polyurea one of the fastest growing polymer coating types in the world.
