What is Sleep sex?
Recently, many magazines have been running stories about sleep sex also called sexsomnia. The titles allude to saucy episodes and outrageous claims, but the reality may be much more difficult.
In scientific studies, sleep sex comes under the umbrella of NREM parasomnia sleep disorder a range of problems sleeping that occur outside of REM sleep (dream sleep). Sleep sex is not considered a sleep disorder in itself more a subset of sleepwalking. Previously, there has been very few cases reported, but now, as sleep sex gains increasing media attention, more people are coming forward for study and treatment for sleep sex.
During sleep sex, a person may make sexual noises, gestures or advances. As they're asleep, they have no control over their actions, and will have no recollection when they wake up. This can sometimes cause problems if the sleeping person makes advances toward their partner.
For most sleep sex sufferers and their partners, the experiences, while strange, are pleasant, and are happily incorporated into their normal sex life. However, some people experiencing sleep sex have known to become aggressive or even violent during an episode, causing their partner distress.
Currently, there has been little research into the causes or treatment for sleep sex. This is partly because, until recently, it was thought to be too rare to warrant such study. Scientists now believe it's more common than they thought, and embarrassment or shame prevented afflicted people from checking in to sleep clinics.
A recent study presented at the Associated Professional Sleep Studies conference in San Antonio found that 1 in 12 people who checked into a sleep clinic now admit to suffering from an episode of sexsomnia. Scientists are monitoring brain activity during periods of sleep sex and are beginning to see some interesting results. They're also noticed high rates of substance abuse and other sleep disorders in people who suffer from sleep sex.
Sleep sex is often treated with the same drugs used to treat sleep apnea and anxiety disorders. Herbal sleeping pills have also been used in some cases, and reports suggest these have a high success rate. Many people prefer taking herbal sleeping pills to prescription drugs.
