What is Wool Sucking?

Some cats have a propensity to suck on cushions

, blankets and anything else they can get their paws on. This behavior is known as wool sucking; it is reasonably common and, in the majority of cases, is harmless. But why do some cats suck on fabrics and are there ways to stop them? What Causes Wool Sucking? It is thought that wool sucking in cats is very similar to thumb sucking in children. Just as children find the act of thumb sucking comforting, a cat finds sucking on fabrics soothing. The same principle is at work, sucking, for any mammal, is comforting, because it is reminiscent of Mom. Consequently, there is a school of thought that suggests that wool sucking is caused by weaning a kitten too early. All kittens depend on Mothers milk for the first six weeks of life, but will still suckle for up to a further ten weeks. Cats that are taken away from their mother before this time are likely to develop the wool sucking habit. In some cases, wool sucking behavior can last well into adulthood and, for some, the search for a surrogate mom lasts an entire lifetime. Breeds That are Prone to Wool Sucking Although it is commonly accepted that early weaning is the cause of wool sucking, the habit can occur in some breeds even if the cat has been properly weaned. Cat owners are likely to see wool sucking behavior in Asian breeds, such as the Persian and the Burmese. Animal behaviorists have not ascertained the cause of wool sucking in these breeds, which indicates that among some cats there is simply a genetic predisposition to the habit. Is it Becoming Obsessive Compulsive? As mentioned above, by and large wool sucking is not something that should concern a cat owner. However, in some instances, the habit can become severe and transform into obsessive compulsive sucking and chewing. Unfortunately, when a cat begins to suck and chew on anything and everything, he, or she, is likely to come to harm. Numerous cats have caused major intestinal blockages through chewing on plastic bags, shoelaces and other materials. Therefore, it is advisable for owners to monitor their cats sucking behavior. If the habit appears to be getting more severe, or you are concerned about something that your cat may have ingested, it is essential to seek the assistance of a veterinarian. Preventing Wool Sucking If you are worried that your cat is becoming obsessive in his, or her, search for objects to suck and chew, there are several steps that may reduce, and in some cases, prevent a cats sucking habits. Firstly, it is wise to reduce your cats access to sources of good chewing, in other words the bathroom, closets and bedrooms, where plenty of blankets, towels and pillows can be found. However, if you are stopping your cat from sucking and chewing on these items, it is important to ensure that they do not begin chewing objects that are more dangerous instead. Therefore, it is advisable to supply your cat with some new toys and extra interactive playtime to help take his, or her, mind off wool sucking. Some cat owners find it helpful to provide a safe outlet for their pets sucking habits, in the form of a cat pacifier, which comes in the shape of a cat with four latex nipples. Although these are safe, owners should bear in mind that a cat could become bored with these items and still search out other things to suck. In of itself, wool sucking is nothing to concern cat owners. However, it is always wise to keep a close eye on your cats habits to ensure that they are not developing into more severe and worrying behaviors.
