Paternity testing involves the comparison of DNA between father and child. Any given child will inherit half their genetic material from each parent and thus, have 50% of their genes inherited from their mother and 50% of their genes inherited from their father. Laboratories test what are known as genetic markers (sometimes called genetic loci) which are very specific locations on specific genes. Since the body contains somewhere between 40,000 and 70,000 genes DNA analysis is a very complex process.

The DNA must be amplified in order to be examined but once the genetic markers have been mapped the comparison between the putative father's DNA profile and that of the child can go ahead. If the child and father tested share the same genetic markers, it can be concluded that the tested father is the biological father of the child. Different laboratories test a different number of markers; what is an important guide lines when making your choice however, is keeping an eye open for accreditations such as ISO or AABB.

How do I go about collecting samples for my paternity test?
