What is the Best Mouse Trap?

It was around 1897 that the classic snapping mouse trap was invented. Since then there have been many attempts to make a better mouse trap. Many have tried to make a better way to eliminate mice and similar rodents, but they have all in one way or another fallen short - or have they? What are the pros and cons to each type of mouse trap and what is the best mouse trap?

In 1897 James Henry Atkinson invented the first snap trap. He appropriately named it the "Little Nipper" and one can only speculate that he called it this because when a mouse tries to steal the bait the metal arm snaps down to 'nip' the mouse.

Today this style of mouse trap is still the most widely sold. They are pretty effective with statistics boasting a 35% kill rate. The cons however are quite substantial. Even with the snap trap being the most widely sold it leaves a lot to be desired of.

Loading a snap trap is hazardous. They snap easily and it takes a few tries to get them set. Sometimes even after a snap trap is set it will snap once set down on the floor or other strategic trap placement. They maim often. If the trap is killing 35% of the time the other 65% of the time is often leaving a mouse scurrying away injured and in pain. The last real con to the traditional snap trap is that once it does catch a mouse it is often thrown away with the mouse still attached causing unnecessary waste. Over all the traditional snap trap is far from the best mouse trap available.

It wasn't for about another 60 years that a strong mouse control solution was introduced. In 1962 the JT Eaton Company introduced the poison block. The idea behind poising the mice is that a mouse can eat the poison and die. There are significant cons to poisons and frankly these cons take them way out of the running of being the best mouse trap.

First of all it can take a mouse an average of 48 hours to die and as much as weeks after eating mouse poison. It is a slow and painful death. Mice usually live in an area about 40 feet from their nests. This means that if a mouse is spotted inside of a house that it is extremely likely their nest is very close. If the nest has not been found by the mouse trapper then it is well hidden. What this means in relation to poisons is that after a mouse eats poison it goes off to die in its nest and the nest is a well hidden place likely inside the house. After the mouse eats the poison it will slowly and painfully scurry off to its nest to die and rot inside the house. This method of mouse trap is far from the best mouse trap considering the associated cons.

This time it was mere 14 years before the next mouse trap came out. The next major development in modern day rodent control was the invention of the glue board, developed by JT Eaton Company in 1979. The glue board is currently under as much scrutiny as poison and in many western countries has been prohibited for sale.

Although effective the glue board mouse trap is extremely cruel to the rodent and as a result the glue board trap is not the best mouse trap. In short, the mouse will walk onto the trap to get bait and will become stuck to the trap. The mouse is then left to die a slow and painful death where they will often attempt to chew off their own limbs in order to escape. Glue traps do not even factor in the competition for best mouse trap as they are far too cruel.

Since 1990 several plastic snap traps have entered the market, although somewhat easier to operate than the traditional wooden / wire traps they fundamentally function in the same way as the 100 year old invention of James Atkinson. These new designs have not managed to overcome the inherit problems associated with snap traps, such as misfires and bait steels, blood and mess and in the case of rat traps dangerous to children and non target species. For these reasons they like their wooden predecessor might sell many units but remain far from the best mouse trap.

It wasn't until 2007 that a truly new mouse trap was invented. It was this year that David Wells and Luc Desbonnets of New Zealand released their revolutionary mouse ring trap invention called the NOOSKI. This mouse trap appears to have shown the first signs of being the best mouse trap, now, and judging from the history, ever.

The way that the Nooski mouse trap works is that it is powered by a small rubber ring. The mouse enters the trap to get the bait, which is cleverly situated so that it is impossible to steal. As the mouse approaches the bait the ring is set off around the mouse's neck causing near instant suffocation and death. The Nooski trap is 100% effective as there have never been reported misses and maiming.

When compared to other mouse traps the Nooski mouse trap comes out as the best mouse trap. Nooskl does not maim, Nooski does not torture with a slow death, Nooski is totally reusable therefore causing no waste and it works every time. When comparing the other mouse traps on the market it appears that the Nooski mouse trap is the best mouse trap ever invented.
