Today, you can find purchase almost anything via the web from property to collector's shoes worn by a famous musician. However, when setting up an online business, it is important that you go for an area that has a substantial ready market. Not everything sells as well over the web some products and services have a higher turnover on average.

So what are the products that sell best over the internet? Services and digital products take the lead everything from niche industry research reports, eBooks, movies and music, to software, images, website design and domain registration.

Another class of products that have a huge online market are those where customers would ordinarily feel embarrassed if purchasing them at a local store. Examples include medication for sexual problems and adult diapers. Buying the product online affords the buyer some form of privacy. For such products, some online businesses will even provide special packaging that makes it difficult for post and shipping employees to know the contents by package's outward appearance.

Consumer products that are not easily available at neighbourhood stores sell well online. These could be niche mineral supplements or custom made shoe brands. Spare parts for home equipment like washing machines, lawn sprinklers and lawn mowers may also fall in this category. This is because retailers do not always stock the spares and will only place an order on request.

On the other end of the spectrum are products that are difficult to sell via the internet. For instance, any product that requires one to taste, smell or touch it before making a decision to buy would not be easy to sell online. Merchandise that would ordinarily require a fitting test before buying would not be easy to sell on the web.

That said, while there products that are a hard sell over the web, there are online entrepreneurs that have managed to successfully turnover substantial sales online for products that would ordinarily be difficult to sell. To achieve this, such entrepreneurs develop creative marketing, product presentation and selling techniques.

In addition, internet users are not homogenous. Internet users cover the entire spectrum of age, gender, faith, profession, nationality, academic credentials, preferences, temperament and political views. By identifying the needs of a particular segment of internet users, it is possible to sell a product that would be require a lot more effort in order to sell to the larger audience of internet users.

For that reason, intensive research on consumer behaviour and preference will better prepare one to carve a niche for their product.
