Decrease sodium intake because sodium can cause water retention - which is not good because this can affect the work load of the heart. The heart cannot function effectively and cannot move the excess fluid throughout the body. To decrease sodium intake, use of salt shall be minimized. In addition sodium is rich in canned foods, preserved foods, chips and fast or restaurant foods.


Caffeine must be avoided. So, for a heavy coffee drinker this is the time to limit or stop coffee intake to maintain good blood pressure. Since this is a stimulant, it can cause the heart to move faster which in turn can also increase high blood pressure.

Cut off smoking, alcohol and prohibited drugs because these can bring deleterious effects to the body. This can greatly damage the heart and the brain too; thus causing heart attack and stroke. Cutting off these things is the most difficult thing to do. You cannot do this in just a wink of an eye. It needs more time and your determination to stop these.

Eating unhealthy foods should be avoided. Those foods that contain large amounts of sugar are the unhealthy foods. These is difficult to cut back too because foods with less sugar often seems less appetizing. But always remember that too much sugar endangers your health because it does not only cause diabetes but your blood pressure can also be affected.

Hence, it is the right time to shift to a healthy diet. Eating healthy foods does not only maintain good blood pressure. But always see to it that you are not going beyond what our body needs. Excessive eating should always be avoided since it does not give beneficial effects to the body.
