One of the reasons I consider myself a lucky amongst all other reasons is because I have being privileged to participate in events that has altered my thought processes and refocused the focal lens of my mind eye, I must confess I do not get invites to a lot of events but the very few I attend, I look within and thank my lucky star for having attended the event.
Sometime in the later part of the year 2004 I saw on the front page of one of weekend edition of The Punch Newspapers, the picture of an American motivational speaker named JOHN FOPPE with the caption WHATS YOUR EXCUSE, I was quick to grab of a copy of the paper to find out what could have inspired such a thought provoking and insightful headline, especially at a time when I was facing a very cross road in my life and I needed badly to make a decision that borders on how to grasp a rewarding career, I lot of things was not working, I busy fixing blames on a whole lot of things; the system, the government of the day, the inequality in the educational system, members of my family. For short, I was not looking inwards at all; I just was thinking everything must be in place for me to ride on.
While I was struggling through that, I quickly skimmed through the pages of the newspaper while I was in transit to find out one of the most rewarding information of my life, the story of JOHN FOPPE. To cap it up I heard he was going to be in The Redeemed Christian Church of God, CHRIST CHURCH PARISH, in Gbagada, I was delighted and I hailed first bank of Nigeria for having sponsored his trip to Nigeria among other sponsors.
Eagerly, I began to advertise the event on a word of mouth medium, my own way, you can call it the grape vine, but I was hell bent on going there no matter the cost and good for me it was absolutely free, so why just can't I invite as many as possible.
On the faithful day I was right on time, I took a very strategic spot against the direction of the usher, I wanted to see for real what this is all about a man with no arms, who has achieved what most complete human beings has not attained.
I found out he was accompanied by one of the most beautiful women on earth; his wife
His biography; Born without arms, John Foppe has had to break down and re-engineer every aspect of day-to-day life. He learned that the inability to do something didn't rest on the lack of resources or vision - it's the emotional reaction to meeting an obstacle, even a small one, head on.
In the field as part of his master's degree in social work, John Foppe saw this scenario play out over and over. To his surprise, he discovered that some people are not willing to continue their improvement and instead have built systems supporting their perceived limitations.
As a speaker, John also witnessed this resistant mindset operate in all sorts of companies. He repeatedly heard leaders complain about how difficult it is to motivate their people. John has addressed this challenge by developing a variety of solutions to effectively translate visions into outcomes. Among John Foppe's answers, he has devised an approach he calls the "Ellipse," a specific set of practices which mobilize one to navigate problems and maintain the vision - to get results.
His compelling story and methods caught the attention of the legendary Zig Ziglar, who broke his long-standing rule of promoting from within and recruited and mentored John.
In 1995, John Foppe launched a successful training business that has taken him training business that has taken him to over 15 different countries. He is the author of What's Your Excuse?, which has been translated into six foreign languages.

I was dumbfounded, and I thought to myself after an intensive, thought provoking speech by this man with no arms, who despite his disabilities he moved on and made it big, he never allowed his shortcomings to weigh him down, he did not fix blames on anyone for his disabilities, not his family, not the government, not even God, I hate to be so emotional but at the end of it all I was close to tears, and I asked myself the big question, having heard his own story on excuse, what's your story? I am throwing that question at you right now, what's your story?
