When A Dental Emergency Occurs Are You Prepared?

Knowing how to handle a dental emergency can mean the difference between saving or losing a tooth

. The best person to reach out to during a dental emergency is your family dentist in Troy. It is important to know how/and if your dentist can be reached when the office is closed because emergencies are best treated promptly. At Rochester Dental, emergencies are seen quickly, and often that same day.

Ideally, your dentist may try to stabilize the problem issue and control pain. Once pain is controlled, your dentist may then ask you to return to further discuss the problem, corrective options and costs taking into account the entire mouth. The last thing anyone would want would be to have one repaired tooth without taking into account other dental needs that may be visible.

Emergencies and Your Children

Injuries to teeth in children and adults can present a unique set of problems in diagnosis and management. Treatment of dental injuries in children can be complicated due to patient anxiety and possible damage to the developing permanent tooth buds. Additionally, consequences of dental emergencies can result in pain, tooth discoloration, nerve complications and tooth loss. Often, the likelihood of successful treatment is dependent on timely management of the problem.

If something happens to any of a child's baby teeth, you should take your child to the dentist as soon as you can. If a baby tooth is completely knocked out, do not try to insert it back in the socket. Although it is normal for children to lose primary teeth, an accident that damages a primary tooth could also harm the permanent adult tooth underneath.

A baby tooth should not be implanted back into the mouth, but a permanent tooth should. Hold the tooth by the crown, and if it is dirty, rinse the root with water. Do not scrub the tooth or remove any attached bits of tissue. If possible, gently insert and hold the tooth in its socket with a clean washcloth or gauze. If this isn't possible, or the child cannot safely hold the tooth in his or her mouth, put the tooth in a container with milk, saliva or water.

Uh Oh - A Broken Tooth?

Teeth are remarkably strong, but they can chip, crack or break. This can happen in several ways:

*Biting down on something hard

*Being hit in the face or mouth

*Falling

*Having cavities that weaken the tooth

If your tooth is broken, rinse your mouth out with warm water to keep the area clean. Put a cool compress as an ice pack on the face to reduce swelling, and go to your dentist in Troy immediately! Your dentist can figure out if the break was caused by cavities, and if the tooth's nerve is in danger, which is a serious warning sign.

A Bitten Tongue or Lip - Ouch!

If you have a bitten tongue or lip, clean the area gently with a cloth and place cold compresses on the area to keep swelling down. If there is a lot of bleeding or it does not stop after a short period of time, take your child to the dentist or emergency center for proper evaluation.

Whether you have bitten your tongue or lip, or broken a tooth, a dental emergency is not something to ignore. Talk to your dentist in Troy, MI about how to properly care for your teeth in any emergency.
