When Am I Going To Need A Liftgate?
If you're shipping products with a delivery company and any of the packages that
you're shipping weight more than 100lbs, you're going to be told that you are going to have to pay for a liftgate. Trucking companies now require that any shipment which is comprised of individual units which weight more than 100lbs must be accompanied by a liftgate, and this is not negotiable except in one very specific instance. The liftgate is a special piece of machinery which attaches to the back of a delivery truck. It is then used to life objects up to the level of the truck, and also to lower them back down to the ground level. It is simply too hard of work for drivers and delivery workers to have to load and unload objects heavier than that from the height of the truck to the ground level all day. There will be a rental fee that accompanies a liftgate, so expect to see that fee added to your invoice when shipping heavy objects.
The exception to the rule is when you are shipping both to and from facilities which have loading docks. This is just one of the many reasons why loading docks are now becoming standard issue on any type of warehouse facility that is dealing in large shipments of cargo, oversized products, or anything shipped in containers or pallets. Not only does it reduce the cost of shipping, but it also greatly reduces the amount of time that it takes to load and unload trucks that are coming to the warehouse. This can be difficult to implement into an existing facility, but for any company that deals in applicable products, the building of a loading dock should be a serious consideration when building a new facility.
Liftgates might cost extra, but they are one of the necessary fees and surcharges that you can expect to see assessed to your bill by your trucking company. The only good thing about this is that shipping companies have to disclose all of the costs and fees that they are going to charge you upfront if you ask for a detailed explanation of the cost that they are going to charge you for shipping. This at least means that you can find out beforehand exactly what it is going to cost you to move your order and aren't going to be surprised by the final bill at the last minute.
