External wheelchair lifts are often used when making accessibility renovations to already existing buildings

The external mount models are useful because the installation requires little alteration or disruption to the structure of the building, and yet they still provide convenient and comfortable access to mobility challenged people. This type of renovation is often conducted on public owned or heavily used buildings in order to bring the space up to disabled access standards and make mobility easier for people of all abilities

There are two main categories of external wheelchair lifts for architecture, the platform model and the stair model. The choice between the two types often depends on the space, both vertical and lateral, available for the structure, and the expected amount of traffic to the area. Platform models usually take up a bit more space but are easy to use and are capable of facilitating the rapid movement of a few people at once. Stair type wheelchair lifts, on the other hand, are more flexible and can fit to the curves and idiosyncrasies of an older building easily.

Besides these two main categories there are many more hybrid forms that are routinely designed and adapted to the demands of different spaces. Many public buildings, for example, feature gently inclined stairs as an access point to the main entrance. When there is no space at either side of the stairs and the slope is low enough for an easy climb by sophisticated machinery, an inclined platform wheelchair lift is often fitted. These mobility accessories form the ideal solution for transporting one person at a time in absolute comfort.

With an external apparatus fitted to your home, workplace or local community building, your access to these spaces will be uninhibited and your scope of freedom widened. External structures are often necessary on mountainous or beach side properties, where the terrain is difficult to negotiate and unreliable for the mobility challenged person. By making these properties more accessible with externally fitted access structures, we effectively allow mobility challenged people to live, work or holiday wherever they choose.

External wheelchair lifts can also be fixed to vehicles to allow for easy access into the car or van and storage of the mobility device during the drive. Although internal structures are often preferred for reasons of visibility and weight, external models are much easier to install as no alteration to the vehicle is required. Externally mounted equipment also frees up space inside the vehicle or building for further movement.
